Long Range Tactical Rifle Match

June 5th, 2004

In a reversal of last year’s conditions for this match, the wind was kind to the poodle-shooters, being mostly neutral. This translated into good headshots for the .223’s, fast times and excellent scores. The .308’s did great too, but their legendary wind-bucking ability wasn’t an advantage this year.

For this year’s match, we created the Dreaded Headshot Target for the 300 yard stage. This is a standard IDPA target with the cardboard head replaced with an 8” balloon. This provided instant hit recognition for the shooters, so that he would know whether or not he has to follow up with shots to the body to “neutralize” the target. The system worked pretty well. In addition, shooters had a very limited amount of time to select a target and shoot. Targets were identified by the SO reading four different “scripts” to simulate a police sniper-type scenario. This was repeated for 8 shots at 300 yards.

Congrats to Rod C, Tom W, and Fred P for perfect 8 out of 8 headshots. Nathan P had another standout performance in a re-shoot, shooting a tactical carbine. His rifle was an 18” barreled AR15, with a 4X ACOG scope. Without the use of a bipod, or even a good target sling, he made 6 out of 8 headshots at 300 yards.

Course Description

This match was ideally suited to Special Purpose Rifles and Bolt-Action Sniper Rifles. However, if you wanted to shoot other types of rifles in this match, you were accommodated by a slightly different course (no head-shots at 300 yards).

Stage One – 100 yards, limited Vickers, 8 rounds, 4 IDPA targets
String One: Starting from the Hip-Ready Position, gun loaded, safety on. On the start signal, assume any shooting position OTHER THAN the prone position, and engage T1 – T4 with one shot each.
String Two: Repeat
Stage Two – 200 yards, limited Vickers, 8 rounds, 4 IDPA targets
Sting One: Starting from the Hip-Ready Position, gun loaded with 4 rounds only, safety on. On the start signal, assume a prone position and engage each target with one shot each, reload from slide lock (or empty) on the clock, and engage each target with one shot each again.
Note: Bipods and slings may be used, but cannot be deployed until after the start signal. Shooters will start in a natural standing stance with the gun hanging naturally at the hip ready position. Rucksacks may be used as front shooting supports, but must start out on the shooter’s back. Sandbags, butt-stock monopods or other butt-stock support devices may NOT be used on this stage. Ammunition or spare magazines must be securely held on the body or attached to the rifle at the beginning of the stage.
Stage Three – 300 yards, Vickers count modified, 8 rounds minimum, many more rounds possible

Targets are modified IDPA targets with the cardboard “heads” replaced with approximately 8” diameter balloons. It’s a fairly easy target to hit, but you will be under intense time pressure and must THINK before shooting.

Scenario: You are a designated marksman for a shadowy government agency involved in the war on terror. Intelligence has discovered that an Al Quaeda terrorist is planning on releasing a nerve agent at the Superbowl. You have been ordered to shoot the terrorist on sight, once given a positive ID. Intelligence indicates that the terrorist (code name Tango) is wearing heavy body armor and has the nerve agent concealed somewhere in his pants. As such, your first target is his head. If the head is missed on the first shot, you will then shoot him in the torso at least twice, hoping that blunt trauma will incapacitate him. The head cannot be shot at after the first shot, since it is assumed that the Tango will be moving rapidly and the head will not be a possible shot. Accidental hits on the head after the first shot will NOT count. The shooter can take unlimited shots on the body, but only the best two will be counted.

The shooter will be given 5 minutes to assume a shooting position at 300 yards. He may use any legal equipment for his rifle class (bipods, sandbags, etc.). The shooter will start with his gun loaded, safety off, aimed at the 4 targets down range. The target order will be determined by the scripts below which will be randomly assigned to the four targets, then randomly ordered. At the beginning of the stage, the SO will begin reading the first script. As soon as the SO positively identifies the target (using the scripts), gives the “greenlight” command, AND the audible start signal is given, the shooter will engage the identified target with one head shot, followed by at least two body shots if the head shot is missed. Hits or misses on balloon heads and times will be recorded for each target. This will be repeated for all 4 targets, then this will be repeated again for 8 targets total at 300 yards. Obviously, the first shot out of the 4 is the toughest, because there are 4 possible targets that can be identified. The last shot out of the 4 will be easiest, because the shooter can start off zeroed on it, knowing that it is the only possible target to shoot.

If the wrong target is shot at and hit, you’re in big trouble!! You’ll get 10 points down for the target you were supposed to hit, 10 seconds added for a no-shoot hit, and you won’t be able to re-engage that target when it comes around. Think before you pull the trigger!

Control-to-Shooter One Scripts:

Feel free to memorize these if you think it will help you. They are going to be so thoroughly randomized that even the author of them (me) won’t know what’s coming.

Note: target ID in bold will be varied randomly on every script from shooter to shooter. All of the scripts will be randomly ordered, except that script B will always be one of the first three shots, and the misidentified subject will always be one of the targets that has not been shot yet.

Tango is the subject on the far left at 300 yards, Green-Light! Green-Light! [beep]

B – Shooter One, Shooter One, this is Control… We’ve got a tentative ID on our Tango… There are four subjects approaching at 300 yards, the Tango is tentatively ID’ed as the subject on the far right, standby for confirmation… Shooter One, Shooter One, Negative on that ID, I say again, Negative on that ID! Tango is confirmed as the subject second from the left at 300 yards, Green-Light! Green-Light! [beep]

C – Shooter One, Shooter One, this is Control… We’ve got a confirmation that the Tango is the subject second from the right at 300 yards, I say again, second from the right at 300 yards, Green-Light! Green-Light! [beep]

D - Shooter One, Shooter One, this is Control… We have intel that our Tango is somewhere in the parking lot, approaching the stadium, wearing a brown jacket with his face painted with the colors of one the teams playing today… Shooter One, Shooter One, this is control… We have a subject at 12:00, 300 yards out, on the far right in that group of five, waiting for confirmation… Shooter One, Shooter One, we’ve got a positive ID on our Tango, he is the subject on the far right.
