And so passes the 26th Annual Francis Marion Memorial Swampfox Assault.

The hard-working staff did it's very best to put the "swamp" in Swampfox this year, despite a relatively dry course. By extending the distance traveled into the swamp this year, we were able to have the firing position for lucky target 13 located directly in what could best be described as a hog wallow. This, after dragging the now famous Heavy-Wooden-Articulated-Dummy from the creek on up to and through the Tunnel o' Mud. Unfortunately, this mud-pit at lucky Target 13 claimed one victim, whose knee swelled up to the size of a football.

The Woods stage was the most aggressive, target-wise, in FM history. Eighteen Pepper Poppers were hauled deep up the flooded ravine, where they were placed in challenging locations. After scrambling up the flooded and muddy creek bed, dispatching steel targets as they appear, the shooter then had to take a precision shot at a water jug, to stop the clock. Hard to do when your heart is leaping out of your chest.

And the finale? Out of the mind of John Moson sprang the cleverest Dry Land stage ever. First, the shooter had to engage three Iranian guards with hand grenades (the real thing, de-milled), before proceeding to various barricades to engage several slug targets. A gravity fed moving target presented two challenging targets for precision slug fire. After this, the shooter reloads with buckshot, picks up a satchel charge, and blows up the Uranium Enrichment facility, while engaging Pepper Poppers (one of them requiring one-handed-shotgun-on-the-move-fu!).

The surprise of the match was first-time shooter, Jay Cochran. Having never seen this match before, he expertly equipped himself and shot very well to come within a few seconds of seizing the overall high score from shooters who have been doing this for too many years to count. I'm sure Jay will bring strange stories of those crazy northern-Ohioans home with him. He'll be the man to watch in the future.

Not a surprise was the continued domination of pump-guns in this match. Lots of jams, mis-feeds and serious malfunctions plagued the autoloaders this year. I did see one serious problem with an 870 pump gun, but the intrepid shooter merely grasped the pump firmly, and hammered the butt stock into the ground to get his action going again. Classic Swampfox antics. If you auto-loader boys continue to bring your guns, we'll continue to find ways to stop them from working.

My thanks to the staff this year, for coming early (some the day before), working hard, and staying late. Special thanks to John Moson and Tony Lavalle for making such a clever Dry Land stage, and to Nathan Phillips for the very nice t-shirts.

On a side note:
Notable this year was an incredibly low amount of participation in the clean-up by the (non-Safety Officer) shooters. It is a common courtesy to assist in the clean up after the match, especially with a large match with so many props. We look forward to having you shoot and help clean up next year.
