2006 DARE Match Scores
Tactical Shotgun & RifleFor the first time in this match director's memory, we had no rain AND cool weather for a DARE match. Just because of that, we'll call it a success. For this year's DARE match, we offered a two string shotgun course and a short range carbine course.
To mix things up, we had no-shoot targets on both pepper poppers and slug targets. Sadly, the no-shoots took a few pieces of buckshot and a few slugs, here and there. I think some shooters will be patterning their shotguns after this match.
My thanks to Rod Cabage for putting on a nice carbine course. Guys like him make the program possible. Also, thanks to the rest of the guys who sacrificed a full day of shooting, to help run these matches. The DARE match is always a LOOOONG day.
See you all at the Francis Marion!!!
A few points to ponder (Unsolicited opinions follow, feel free to ignore):
- Two shooters had problems with their red dot
sights. One forgot to turn his on, the other had dead
batteries. You can imagine how bad this would be if bad guys
were shooting at you or your family when you discover this. If
you must have an optic on your ?home defense go-to-gun?, you
may want to reconsider whether or not you want something that
has an on-off switch, or needs batteries. There are other
options too: a) Illuminated reticle scopes still have their
standard reticle if the illumination isn't on for whatever
reason b) Trijicon makes several nice models that are fiber
optic / tritium powered. I?m no expert, but I've been running
these matches for awhile, and have seen a lot. I see this
happen several times a year. Matches are "low stress" compared
to the real world. How would you like to being messing around
with buttons, batteries or back-up sights in the real world, in
the dark, with bad guys shooting at you?
- If you have an American made shotgun, be careful about
using European buckshot. This stuff isn't made to the exact
same specifications as American, and will often hang up on
ejection, or sometimes misfeed or gets stuck in the chamber.
Examples are: S & B, Wolf, Fiochi and Brenekke. In
addition, expect to get one round less in your magazine, using
European ammo. If you get a really good deal on this ammo,
check out how well it functions in your gun before you rely on
it during a match, or worse, home defense. Federal Classic #1
buckshot is relatively expensive, but it always takes the poppers down
(better than 00), and I've never seen anyone have a function
problem with it. The "experts" also say it's the best for
shooting bad guys.
