Gun Match - "The Father's Day Fight Stopper"
June 21, 2009
The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold, a slight breeze, and a few innocent clouds lazily wafting by. What could possibly make this Father’s Day any better? A Tactical Shotgun match, with the sweet sound of buckshot crashing against steel and the smell of cordite in the air? YOU GOT IT!
ALGC was once again home to one of those “Goldilocks” matches, where it was just right, all the way down to the excellent crew of folks who not only showed up to savor the sweet song of straining steel and lead, but who helped put it all away. The great thing about pepper poppers: it is an excellent target for a shotgun and reacts well to a lot of lead. The bad thing is: they weigh 40 pounds apiece, and we used nearly every one ALGC had, in addition to every single barrel at ALGC! Almost the entire crew stayed to help clean up the stages, and make short work of the whole day. A great effort on the Tactical shooting, and a great effort on keeping things moving.
Our Tactical Shotgun shooters found themselves facing two stages, run twice for the first stage and thrice for the second stage. In the former, we began seated firing slugs at targets wearing shirts (Most bad guys do not stencil their A zone on their shirts – how rude), went into a serpentine pattern firing at whomever lay in our path after clearing weapons of slugs, blasted the remaining bad guys at the last barrel before running the long gun dry (showing clear) and transitioning to handgun to hit the poppers. The second run featured weak hand shooting.
In the second stage, we found ourselves kicking back with our feet in the air when trouble came knocking. Trouble ended up receiving a lot of buckshot. Shooters were forced to make quick “shoot/no shoot” decisions based on symbols on the targets three times per string, three strings, for a total of nine confusing possible mix-ups. Not only did shooters negotiate the doorway, the thinker, and the hallways well, but few shooters (not even “Crazy Legs” Henthorne!) shot the wrong targets. A comforting thought for hostages.
All in all, a great day at the range. A special thanks goes out to Mark Amodeo who arrived to help set up at 9am at ALGC, and was there at the end. He is not yet a member of ALGC, but with great events like the IDPA State Match, the Law Enforcement Match, and the infamous Francis Marion Swamp Fox Classic ahead of us, how could anyone not want to be?
