Tactical Rifle Match

Shooters,

Saturday the range gods gave us a reprieve from the rain, but not the wind. This made for some challenging shooting at the variety of targets on the four courses of fire with winds ranging from a gusty 5-10 mph to gust over 20 as the day went on.

The first C0F was very straight forward – A 12” Bull’s-eye at 300 yards, 4 shots fired in 90 seconds. Bull’s-eye was 25 points, descending to 10 points for the outer “8” ring. Next CoF was 300 yards shots on “Zombie” targets, 12 targets visible, shooter were assigned a color immediately beforehand and had to scan the targets and fine the three correct targets. The best single hit was all that was required, more follow up body shots were allowed but just added to time, difficult to tell if they were needed of course if you could not see the holes…should I trust my skills or shoot again?

The third CoF was also very straight forward. 200 yards, shoot all six .5 liter water bottles, maximum of 12 shots. Did we mention the wind?

Fourth CoF found the shooter facing 5 hostile targets and two hostages. The hostages were nearly obscuring the hostiles except for a 1 ½” x 1 ½” square, which was to be hit with the rifle at 25 yards…knowing where your rifle shoots at different ranges was a good thing in this scenario. After engaging the two hostage obscured threats, the shooter transitioned to pistol and engaged three targets at 25 yards from the prone position.

All smiles on this day with a wide variety of weapons used. The crowd favorite by far was Adam Hill, currently on leave from Afghanistan, nailing water bottles with an AR-15 equipped with only a Trijicon fixed 4 power scope. This did not seem to affect Adam at all, as he obliterated one bottle after another to the delight of the crowd!

Overall top shooter was defending champion Jason “Crazy Legs” Henthorne, shooting in the automatic division with his stock AR-15 RRA Coyote shooting 75 grain bullets, with top Bolt Gun honors going to Howard Funk, shooting a bolt action .308 Rem 700.

This was the final Tactical Match of the season; it has been a great year with my trusty Co-Director Fred Phillips and great help from folks like Mike McGreer, Nathan Wilson, Dave Klute, and a few non members as well. Thank you to all who have made this a fantastic season for the Tactical Rifle and Shotgun Program!
