2015 TACTICAL RIFLE MATCH/CLINICThe weather was good and the people were great. I know all the Safety Officers and those who helped setup and teardown were completely fried by the end of the day’s shooting. I can’t thank all of you enough for the contributions you make to the program. Everybody was very helpful and things just fell into place relatively well. Kudos to the TR&S crew!
It was nice to see a lot of familiar faces as well as a few new. Everybody listened and followed command with ease, thanks to Roy’s clinic and pre match preparation. I know it can be stressful the first few times out to shoot this type of match, but the more you do it the more comfortable and confident you’ll become. Safety always being in the forefront and the skill will come, along with the speed. I did notice a couple of common problems. One was the holster systems, you need to be able to draw efficiently and re-holster with one hand safely without having to severely cant or twist the muzzle to get it back into the holster. Ideally you should be able to re-holster safely without even looking. Two, the holster should be stable and have enough tension/retention to not let the firearm fall out. We do force people to shoot from unstable positions and in ways that could dislodge the sidearm from a holster if it’s not properly suited to tactical type shooting. I should not be able to walk up to you and twist your holster 45 degrees in any direction especially up-range. The muzzle should point toward the ground (while standing) within approximately 10-15 degrees and not move beyond that range of motion. Most everyone had an (qualified) ECI, but a few didn’t, please purchase/borrow one for any future matches.
Slings are a PITA, but are necessary to what we do. I have all three types of slings (single, two point, three point) they all work. Some work better for certain styles of shooting than others. You just have to find what works for you. Start with a good two point sling that will SAFELY hold your long gun and position it for transitions without wanting to flip the rifle/shotgun over the other direction. Attaching the sling off to the side of the rifle helps with the position instead of the traditional sling swivels on the bottom. Lastly get used to working that safety during the matches so it becomes second nature to just disengage/re-engage the safety. Thanks you everyone who shot in yesterday’s match. Looking forward to seeing everyone in future ALGC, TR&S matches. P.S. Please lookup the division you’ll be shooting and list it on the score sheet next to your name. The rules are on the webpage under the Tactical program link. Nathan Wilson, TR&S Director Roy Mitchell, TR&S Co-Director
