Marion Memorial Swamp Fox Assault XXXVIIThe 37th Francis Marion Memorial was a classic example of everything the Faithful have come to expect: three challenging stages including a three gun dry land stage, a grueling and muddy swamp stage (yes, the zipline was back) and a tricky woods stage, including long slug shots and repelling down a muddy hill with a rope.
I've been doing this for 20-something years now, and with various nagging injuries, your match director was limping slowly, shooting even slower and not doing as much labor as in past years. Because of that, I was truly humbled by the cheerful hard work and support of the set-up volunteers, safety officers and cooks. This match doesn't quite run itself, but the sweat, creativity and love that everyone puts into their work makes it easy. I can't thank the volunteers and shooters enough for making this another very successful and fun Francis Marion.
During the Friday afternoon set-up, the course practically had tumbleweeds blowing through the cattails, it was so dry. Then, approximately an hour before the SO's began shooting, the heavens opened up, delivering the soup and mud that brings joy to our hearts. Jason Henthorne's maniacal cackling could be heard for miles around.
So how did the shooting go? A perusal of the scores will indicate that once again, Jason Henthorne and Nathan Wilson ran this entire course within roughly 1% of each other, in the SFS division. How that is even possible, I don't know. Nathan Goebel, the ETS winner, was on track to be right there with them, until he had an unplanned early parting of ways with the zipline. Time Swineford led the SRG pack with a very strong showing.
Speaking of ziplines... 71 year old Vietnam veteran Cliff Reeves shot his first Francis Marion this year. Not only did he complete the entire match with a smile on his face, he successfully negotiated the zipline AND he showed up Friday in the 90° plus heat to set-up. Seeing “new” shooters like Cliff do this kind of thing the first time makes it all worth it. After the match, the fellowship, adult beverages and amazing food (thanks Combat Cuisine!) are the highlight of the social year.
