TR&S TACTICAL RIFLE MATCH

August 20, 2016

I must say that I, as a course designer, learned a few things about the 300 yard stage. Most of it has to do with the “mind set” of the shooter. Some shooters, waiting for their turn, watched other shooter’s mistakes and person after person kept making the same flub over and over again, even after knowing it was going to be a possible issue for them as well. Normally the safety officers will shoot the stages first and pass along any pertinent info, plus if we make mistakes we will know what to watch out for when others shoot. Well, I shot last yesterday on the 300 and knew where everyone made mistakes so I had the advantage, which I normally don’t want, but I was more than tired after running all the shooters through( along with the help of Tim) so maybe it’s a wash.

The 200 yard stage had its own difficulty with those seemingly super small plates. Roy Mitchell was the only one who cleaned all the steel plates. He’s obviously a member of the “clean plate club”. Nice job! I have one bit of advice for the new shooters, when you have a closed bolt and you need to load a “full capacity” magazine you have to pay special attention to getting that mag seated properly. It takes a lot more pressure to effectively lock that mag in place, but sometimes if you over seat the magazine by aggressively hammering the bottom of the mag you can have equally disastrous results especially with plastic magazines.

One more thing, as a side note, scores don’t mean much. We all have our own goals and reasons to shoot these matches. Some like to have the least points down, some like to shoot as fast as possible and ultimately rack up the PDs. Others focus on correct use of cover and tactical form. The only thing I don’t like is people trying to game the stage, but if that is there goal I won’t condemn them as long as they are within the rules. The point I am trying to make is everyone has different ideas and goals in mind when they shoot so don’t put too much emphasis on scores, it’s just a way of organizing the game. Just be safe and have fun while trying to meet your goals.

As usual I want to thank everyone who helped setup and run the match. Also thanks to those shooters who stay and help break down the match. The TR&S 3 gun match is next month and will be a ton of fun, so hope to see everyone then.
